Lagaan (2001) is a Hindi sports drama film directed, co-produced and co-written by Ashutosh Gowariker. Aamir Khan stars as Bhuvan, an Indian farmer who takes up the challenge of facing the British Raj in a game of traditional Indian cricket called lagaan (a match that has to be won by losing 10 wickets). Who knew that cricket could be so enthralling? Lagaan is a 2001 Indian film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker starring Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh and Rachel Shelley. It’s set in India during the British rule in 1893 and tells the story of Bhuvan, played by Aamir Khan. It is a fictionalised version of the Indian Cricket victory over the English cricket team in a match played in Bombay. Bhuvan forms a cricket team from his village to take on the English team and win back their lost land. With passionate fight scenes, outstanding performances and stunning imagery, this is one high-spirited film that will have you on your feet cheering. Based on a story by Gowariker's grandfather, Lagaan explores the colonial era in India and how it affected local culture. Gowariker says he intended the movie to show both sides of the colonial story: how British rule helped modernise India, but also how it corrupted traditional culture. In the movie, the British get Bhuvan's village of Panchgani to agree to a game of cricket if they win, they win back their land that was taken from them by the British. Gowariker has said that while Lagaan is a fictionalised telling of an actual event, he wanted it to be based on fact and wanted to make sure that many things in it were accurate according to what happened in 1893. His initial inspiration for Lagaan came from his grandfather who had been a cricket fan although not a player himself. The film was shot in Rajasthan and Gujarat, India. Lagaan has won many awards including the National Film Award, Filmfare Awards and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie. It became very popular among the Indian audience. The soundtrack is composed by AR Rahman with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. The songs are based on traditional folk Baul songs of Bengal, Assam and Odisha that were made into Bengali pop songs by Ajoy Chakrabarty. The song "Aapka Desh" is sung by Asha Bhosle who was originally heard singing the song in the original version of the film (sung by Kishore Kumar). The soundtrack featured the song "O Rey Re", which became a huge hit outside India. The song has really catchy tune, and extremely addictive. "Chad Gayi Hai Pyar" is another popular song apart from "O Rey Re". The Bengali folk track, "O Rey Re" was adapted into Hindi by AR Rahman. Rahman also performed the vocal version of the song that was used in the film. The film grossed about Rs 30 crore in India and it is one of the highest grossing Indian films of 2001, next only to super star Rajnikanth's "Baba". Although critics gave mixed reviews about Lagaan, it proved to be a huge hit among Indian audiences across India. cfa1e77820
